Exceptional Mexican War Era U.S. Model 1836 Single-Shot Flintlock Martial Pistol, by Robert Johnson of Middletown, CT, NVSN, .54 cal., 8.5'' round barrel with brass blade front and dished-oval rear sights, is marked ''US./JH/P'' and a tiny ''B'' at breech, with a captive stirrup-style button-tip steel ramrod; beveled lockplate is marked ''US./R. Johnson/Middn Conn/1842'' below the flint cock and curved brass pan; iron furniture includes a single barrel band having a long serpentine ''sideplate'', two-piece trigger guard with long lower tang extending to the circular buttcap whose backstrap extends to the top barrel tang; oil-stained one-piece walnut stock. Mfg'd 1842, with case hardened lockplate, hammer and frizzen, blued frizzen spring and trigger, and the balance of the metal finished bright. Condition is near excellent. Iron surfaces retain their original ''in-the-bright'' finish, with sharp edges and markings, the trigger and frizzen spring retain much original blue, the case hardened parts show a clean silvered tone. Stock is smooth and solid with original ''feathering'' and pleasing grain and color, and sharp left-side Army inspectors' markings of ''W.A.T'' (William A. Thornton) and ''JCB'' (Joseph C. Bragg) impressed within oval cartouches. Action is smooth and crisp; smoothbore is bright with scattered light etching; the pistol appears to be in original flintlock configuration with unbushed touchhole and correct parts. Est.: $1,500-$3,000. (Antique)
