U.S. Model 1843 Hall-North Percussion Carbine, a.k.a. ''Side Lever Hall'', NVSN, .52 smoothbore cal., 21'' barrel (semi-octagonal behind lower band) with small post front and notched rear sights; steel receiver is marked ''U.S./S. North/Midltn./Conn./1851'' atop rear-hinged breechblock that pivots upward when long right-side lever is lowered; iron furniture including 8.5'' ring bar on left side, two barrel bands, actuating lever, triggerguard with extended top and bottom tangs, buttplate, and button-tip ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock. Barrel and iron furniture originally finished in distinctive Hall brown lacquer, with case hardened breech. Mfg'd ca. 1844-53. Condition is very good, the metal parts showing a darkened age patina with traces of brown lacquer, case hardened receiver and breechblock having silvered out. Stock with the expected marks of age and military service and with a likely later coat of varnish. Stock wrist has an old paper label that reads, in part, ''First American Breech Loading Rifle-Made at Harpers Ferry-Captured by John Brown''; another label on left buttstock is partially legible: ''Harpers Ferry'' and the date ''1837''. These Model 1843 Halls were issued to the 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons during the Mexican War, and to Union cavalry regiments in the Civil War. Action is strong; bore is clean with deep rifling. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)
